Questions frequently asked about digital audio recording
Q: How long after the concert does it take to get the CDs?
A: Typical turnaround is 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the complexity of
the editing, whether or not artwork was ordered and number of copies ordered.
Q: What is involved in editing?
A: Removing extraneous applause, reducing audience- or environmental noise,
making the quiet solos and passages louder and clearer.
Q: Can you leave a particular introduction/dedication/monologue in?
A: Not a problem! The group leader just needs to let the engineer know
what should be left in. Note that these are usually removed from the recording
unless we are specifically asked to leave them in.
Q: Can you make the soloists louder?
A: All attempts are made to make solos and other quiet passages as clear
as possible. However, with a live concert recording, raising the volume
on the quiet parts also raises the volume of extraneous noise from the
audience and other sources, so there is a limit to how loud a soft solo
can be before the noise becomes distracting. Some groups have had good
success with amplifying soloists via microphone and PA, however the results
of this are out of the recording engineer’s control.
Q: Can you remove the coughs from the quiet parts?
A: The impact of coughs and other noise can usually be greatly reduced,
but they cannot be completely removed without adversely affecting the
music. Again, all attempts are made to make the music as clear as possible.
Q: The concert was over two hours long. Will it all fit on one CD?
A: A standard compact disc will hold up to 80 minutes of music. All attempts
are made to fit the entire concert on one CD by removing or shortening
applause, removing unnecessary monologues or introductions etc. In the
event that all of the selections performed will not fit on one disc, the
group leader will be contacted and asked to make a decision regarding
how to proceed. The concert may be extended to two CDs, at additional
cost, or one-or-more selections may be omitted in order to fit on one
CD.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The recording and editing costs $600, plus $5 each per copy ordered.
If no copies are ordered, you will receive a single master CD which you
may use to run copies on your own or order copies from a third-party duplication
service. Prices are subject to change without notice. For a quote, please
call 781-883-9006 or email kk@karlkornfeld.com.
Q: Is artwork available?
A: Artwork, e.g., printed CDs, jewel case inserts and four page (one-sheet)
booklets are available at additional cost. If no artwork is ordered, unmarked
CDs will be delivered in jewel cases without inserts.
Q: My punk rock band is playing at a club; can you record it for us?
A: The recording and editing techniques described here are not well suited
for this type of concert; they are best suited for acoustic concerts or
concerts with minimal amplification. Between the volume of most rock bands
and the poor acoustic qualities of most rock venues, you are unlikely
to be happy with the result. More elaborate (and expensive) techniques
are necessary. Please call 781-883-9006 or email kk@karlkornfeld.com
